I am looking for a training partner. The ideal candidate will have the following qualities:
- Genre: Male
- Strenght: Physically strong
- Age: Between 20 to 60 years of age.
- Weight: Between 170 to 280 lbs.
- Height: If you can stand, you’re tall enough. The taller the better.
- Willing to learn
Your duty is to do whatever you need to do in an effort to throw me around. You can push, grab, joint lock, pull me, etc. These terms of engagement do not include punching or kicking for obvious reason. An accidental strike is ok. This will happen anytime two people play. Other than that, you are welcome to give it your best shot.
No money. However, I offer you the opportunity to learn martial arts. If you are already a martial artist, then I offer you a body to work your thing out.. I guarantee to give you a run for your money, so to speak.
The reasons I make this offer are manifold. I’ll explain:
A) I need to sharpen my skills. In any artform, if one does not practice, skill level quickly declines. As a Tai Chi instructor, the majority of students that wish to take my classes are women, elderly and new age pacifists. This is fine, since Tai Chi is to be studied by all. However, as one who wishes to practice Tai Chi as a martial art, these type of students do not offer the physical input I need in order to progress.
B) I need to stay in shape. As I have crossed my half-a-century mark in age, I find it more difficult to keep my weight under control and my stamina seems to be in decline. This is not acceptable. And, although I do belong to a gym, this is really not my scene. I much prefer team work and physical contact.
C) I wish to return to the tournament circuit. Several years ago I was very active in competition. I have won a number of tournaments usually competing against men half my age. There a few tournaments next year that I would like to participate. However, unless I train in a serious fashion, there’s no need to waste money.
I’m not really sure how all of the above comes across. Let me assure you that my attitude about this matter is totally in a spirit of humility. I have no need to prove anything to anyone. My macho days were tamed long ago. I only wish to sharpen my skills, get in better shape and deepen my understanding of tai chi.
I will utilize Tai Chi’s Push-hands as my defensive method. Outside of punching, you are welcome to use whatever you like.
